📚 How much would I save by anchoring and doing DIY maintenance on a sailboat?
⛵ Cruising Budget
[-] Deciding to live on a sailboat is a dream for many, but the monthly budget varies wildly depending on your lifestyle. As James & Nat puts it, everybody's budget is going to be a little bit different we met cruisers who living on ten thousand dollars a month to cruise are living on less than 500 a month. This calculator helps you compare the costs of a DIY, at-anchor lifestyle versus relying on marinas and professional mechanics.
🔧 Vessel & Upkeep
[-] Maintenance is the biggest wildcard for any cruiser. Doing the work yourself saves a fortune, but you must be prepared for surprises. As James & Nat points out, it's about one percent of our boats value now they typically say that you should spend anywhere between 10 to 30 percent so this is a massive scale.
Also, remember that the bigger the boat you buy the more cost associated and if you hit the catamarans double the cost. As James & Nat warns, whatever you think you are going to spend on repairs and maintenance double it maybe even tripping.
🏝️ Docking Choices
[-] Where you park your boat drastically impacts your budget. Living at anchor saves a fortune. James & Nat averages just $41/month on docking because they almost never use marinas.
If you prefer the convenience of walking off your boat, expect to pay a premium. As James & Nat notes, we have met cruisers who do marina to marina and they will never go to anchor and so you know they're spending five six hundred dollars a month just in marinas or more i'm sure.
🛒 Daily Living
[-] Your daily living costs depend heavily on your cruising ground. Europe has cheap groceries and insurance but higher fuel costs because you motor-sail to beat weather windows. The Caribbean has expensive food and hurricane insurance, but consistent trade winds mean less diesel.
Use Noonsite like a bible for researching the varying costs of local agent fees, cruising permits, and entry formalities when sailing between different countries.
