As Adam puts it, Heat Geek often sees customers asking other customers how much does your heat pump customer run a month, expecting that if they get a heat pump it's going to cost a similar amount. It's incredibly unlikely to be anywhere near similar.

To find your actual cost difference, you first need your baseline energy demand. You can find this on a home energy assessment or by converting your historical fuel usage into kWh.

Modern gas boilers operate around 90% efficiency. As Adam notes, if Heat Geek is going to heat with a newer gas boiler, for example, Heat Geek would assume around about a 90 percent efficiency. This means you lose 10% of the energy you pay for right out of the exhaust pipe.

Heat pumps are rated by their Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP). As Adam points out, using a 50 degree flow temperature and a 7 kilowatt heat pump for a good average example, Heat Geek can see that they'd be generating a scalp of 3.65. That's 365 percent efficiency.

Well-insulated houses mean that the heat pump can run at a lower temperature and get a much higher cop, which again drags down the running costs. As Adam explains, yes electricity is more expensive, but heat pumps are that much more efficient than boilers and, installed in the right way in the right property, can be much cheaper to run.
