🎢 When can I achieve Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE is the point where you have enough in your retirement accounts that, without any further contributions, your investments will grow to support you by a traditional retirement age. Reaching this milestone means you only need to earn enough to cover your current living expenses. This provides immense flexibility to pursue a passion project, work part time, or change careers without worrying about saving for the future.

To figure out your Coast FIRE timeline, we need to know where you're starting from. Your current age, existing retirement savings, and how much you add each year are the key inputs. We've pulled some of this information from your profile to give you a head start.

Next, let's define the finish line. Your target retirement age and desired spending in retirement determine the total nest egg you'll need. We also need to make some assumptions about how your investments will perform over time. A 7% real return (after inflation) and a 4% safe withdrawal rate are common starting points for these calculations.

The "4% rule" is common advice, but it's also a very risk averse approach and assumes you don't adapt to market swings. Even if you go a little higher to 5-6%, you still have a very strong likelihood of ending your life with more money than you know what to do with.
