This calculator is a great tool for anyone leaving a job and deciding how to move their 401(k). It clearly illustrates the "cash crunch" trap of an indirect rollover, showing exactly how much you'll need to front out of pocket to cover the mandatory 20% IRS withholding. If you can't cover that gap, the tool accurately calculates the resulting taxes and early withdrawal penalties you'd face. Keep in mind that this assumes your balance is entirely pre-tax; if you have Roth 401(k) funds, the tax math on a failed rollover would look a bit different.
