๐Ÿ’ผ Working Capital

This calculator figures out the exact capital you need to start a box truck business. You actually need a solid financial cushion before you even think about buying a truck. Calculate your personal living expenses and projected business costs to build this foundation.

As Entre Mike points out, before diving into startup cost, you need a solid financial cushion. Working capital is defined as six months to a year worth of living expenses plus six months of projected business expenses. Save this money to survive the critical first months of operation.

๐Ÿ“‹ Compliance Costs

These are your mandatory fixed startup costs for legal protection and interstate authority. As Entre Mike notes, LLC is what people use probably 90 to 95% of the time when starting, and it costs $300 to $500 usually to start this up. The application for the DOT and MC numbers together costs $300, or $400 grouped together with other required filings.

You also need commercial trucking insurance. Entre Mike warns that your down payment on the low end may be around $1,000 to $5,000 depending on your record. Add in $200 for your annual medical card and truck inspection to complete your compliance baseline.

๐Ÿšš Truck Acquisition

You must choose how to get your equipment. Renting provides the lowest barrier to entry at around $2,300 upfront. As Entre Mike advises, renting will be the lowest barrier to entry, letting you test the business model before committing.

Financing requires a down payment of zero to $15,000 in his opinion. Buying in cash removes monthly payments but adds massive risk. Entre Mike states that if you do not know anything about the industry, investing up to $60,000 or $100,000 for your first truck doesn't make the most sense.
