📊 What is the total cost to get trucking authority?
🚚 The Real Cost
[-] He is Daniel at LogRock, and he will walk you through the real costs of getting your trucking authority in 2026. Everyone Googles the cost and thinks it is a $300 fee. That is just the FMCSA application. Paying it does not mean you can legally haul a single load.
This calculator breaks down the actual cost. As Daniel puts it, getting started can run you anywhere from $12,000 to $30,000 before you legally haul a single load. Almost nobody warns you about that until it is already too late. Logrock will calculate the operating cash reserve you absolutely need to survive the pending period.
📝 Filings & Fees
[-] The $300 MC authority fee is just the starting line. As Daniel puts it, it is nonrefundable the second you click submit. You also must pay for a BOC-3 filing, UCR registration, LLC setup, and a DOT approved drug testing consortium.
Filing yourself saves cash. Paying a service can prevent paperwork errors that delay your active date. As Daniel notes, most carriers pay somewhere between $20 and $100 for that BOC-3 through a service.
🛡️ Insurance & Reg
[-] Insurance is the heavyweight expense and the ultimate gatekeeper. While federal law dictates a minimum of $750,000 in liability, market reality demands a $1,000,000 policy. Annual premiums run from $10,000 to $25,000 or more. You usually need a down payment of $3,000 to $6,000 to activate the policy.
Taxes and registration also stack up into the thousands. IRP apportioned plates run anywhere from $1,500 to $4,000 a year. If your truck is over 55,000 lb, the heavy vehicle use tax adds another $550 annually.
⏳ Survival Runway
[-] Once you are active, you still have to float your business. The biggest trap for new owners is assuming the initial fee is all it takes. As Daniel warns, your first broker settlement could be 30, even 45 days out after you deliver your first load.
You need cash to cover fuel, tolls, your truck note, and personal expenses during this gap. If you bleed out your cash while sitting in the FMCSA pending period of 21 days, you will fail in your first 90 days. Treat your operating reserve as a required line item.
