This calculator helps you estimate the capital gains tax you'll owe when cashing out a portion of your investment portfolio. It adds meaningful formula logic beyond the original view by correctly calculating proportional gains and including a gross-up calculation to find exactly how much you need to sell to hit a net cash target. Keep in mind that the math assumes you are selling a proportional slice of your entire account's gains; if your brokerage allows you to choose specific tax lots to sell, you might be able to lower your actual tax bill.
