๐Ÿ“Š How much should a retaining wall cost?

Intro

What goes into a professional retaining wall quote, and how can you spot a bid that is dangerously low? The true cost of a wall includes direct materials, direct labor, overhead, and a reasonable profit margin. This calculator breaks down the real cost of building a retaining wall so you can evaluate quotes like an expert.

๐Ÿงฑ Wall Dimensions

The true size of your wall includes the exposed face plus a buried base course (typically 6 inches) for stability. Multiply the total height by the length to get the total 'face feet' of the project.

As I Am a Hardscaper puts it, we're going to base this example on a 100 face foot wall. We're going to do 50 linear feet at 2 feet high... but we also have a buried course of 6 in.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Costs & Margins

Direct costs include materials (blocks, caps, gravel, drainage pipe) and labor. A legitimate business needs a solid profit margin to cover overhead expenses like equipment depreciation and insurance.

As I Am a Hardscaper notes, a healthy gross profit margin for a hardscape business to do a project like this is around 50%. This effectively doubles the direct costs of the job to ensure the business can survive and honor warranties.

๐Ÿ“ Quote Evaluation

Compare your quote to the estimated fair price. If a contractor quotes you significantly less than this, they are only covering their direct costs and are definitely cutting corners somewhere.

As I Am a Hardscaper explains, if someone is charging $57 per face foot, you know that once again, they're definitely cutting corners somewhere. Because that means that there's nothing left for the indirect costs of that business.
