🚐 How much would I save by boondocking instead of staying in RV resorts?

🚐 The RV Budget

Deciding between RV resorts and boondocking dramatically impacts your monthly budget. As Darlene points out, in 2023 we spent an insane amount living what felt like a permanent vacation. Your first year on the road looks nothing like your third.

By pivoting in 2024, that decision to boondock cut our expenses by 63 percent. Use this calculator to see exactly how much you could save by swapping high-end RV resorts for free or low-cost camping.

🏕️ Travel & Housing

How often you move and where you stay are your biggest financial levers. Shifting from full-time resorts to a mix of boondocking and state parks can easily cut your housing costs in half. Keep in mind that moving every week makes your fuel costs skyrocket compared to staying stationary for two to four weeks.

As Darlene notes, we spent about $1,600 a month on camping our first year when I booked campgrounds out for the whole year. In 2024, we took that to $825 a month, which is a combination of boondocking and staying at paid places.

🛒 Living Expenses

Your baseline living costs still apply on the road. Our grocery bill includes household items and alcohol, and we spend more due to specialty needs like gluten-free food.

Staying connected is also non-negotiable for remote work. We use a combination of Starlink and T-Mobile to ensure reliable internet access no matter where we park.

🔧 Maintenance & Safety

You absolutely need an oh crap account because RV repairs are inevitable. As Darlene explains, mobile techs earn $200 an hour and that adds up pretty quick.

Major maintenance hits hard too. To replace tires on a dually, you got six tires and they're not cheap, as those cost us $2,600. Always keep a cash cushion and never skimp on full-replacement insurance.
