As Open Roading puts it, if you're wondering if it's cheaper living in an RV than a sticks in bricks house or you're just pling nosy we have all the numbers for you the breakdown of our budget every single category. Use this calculator to compare your current housing costs against the reality of life on the road.

These are the unique expenses of living on the road. You can save big by boondocking and work camping. As Open Roading notes, our monthly average is around $146 and the highest amount that we have ever spent in campgrounds in the course of a year was in 2020 just under $2,700.

The trade off comes in fuel and upkeep. As Open Roading explains, over the course of the past 5 years we have managed to average $550 a month for just fuel. Upkeep of the truck including oil changes and major repairs is about $378 a month. You will also need multiple mobile carriers to ensure a reliable connection.

Groceries, health insurance, and pet care often mirror normal life. These costs fluctuate wildly depending on whether you are near a major city with big box stores or out in a rural area. Open Roading lowered their health premiums to $350 a month by using the RV Insurance Exchange.

Tracking everything is crucial. Open Roading uses YNAB to track all 5 years of their road expenses. As Open Roading concludes, the big average total that we spend per month typically in RV life over the last 5 years it has come to about 35 or $3600 a month.
