🕰ïļ Should I take my survivor pension now or defer payments?

(Based on this /r/personalfinance question.)

Deciding whether to take pension payments now or defer them for a higher amount later is a common financial question, especially for survivor or frozen pension plans. This calculator helps you compare the two options by analyzing the potential long term value of each choice. You can see how deferring payments affects your monthly income and find the breakeven point where one strategy becomes more valuable than the other.

Start by entering the amount you'd get per month if you took the pension today. Then, add the annual deferral growth, i.e., the rate at which that payment increases for each year you wait.

Define your strategy and assumptions. The number of years you defer directly impacts your future payment amount. The analysis horizon is how many years into the future we might expect to receive payments.

If you take payments early, investing them can significantly increase their total value over time. If you plan to reinvest, put a reasonable number here to allow for a more accurate comparison against the higher payments from deferring. If you do not plan on investing, put 0. This calculator does not account for taxes on investment gains.
